What is Botox/Dysport?

They are medications known as a neuromodulators. They have been used for cosmetic purposes for more than twenty years with a very high safety profile. The dosage used for cosmetic purposes is very small and the injection of neuromodulators for cosmetic purposes is the number one medical aesthetic treatment performed worldwide. It is used cosmetically to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily relaxing facial muscles.

Many young people nowadays are using neuromodulators as a means of preventing wrinkles, even for those who have not yet developed wrinkles. As an effective way of anti-aging treatment, starting early is the key for the prevention.

How does it work?

Neuromodulators are also known as neurotoxins. They work by changing the way nerves and muscles communicate. Don’t let the word toxin scare you! As a medication, it is extremely safe, and cosmetically it is used in very small doses. It works by relaxing facial muscles that causes excessive animation of the face. Excessive animation of the face leads to wrinkles that eventually overtime becomes permanent markings on our face. These markings can age us in appearance, they can also make us appear angry, sad, tired or stressed out. Neuromodulators can smooth the muscles that cause excessive animation and relax other muscles for cosmetic benefits. Neuromodulators are also great for face slimming.

What to expect?

We will start every appointment by taking ‘before’ photos of the areas being treated. You and our nurse will then discuss the concerns or enhancements you have in mind along with costs. Treatment will be explained along with side effects and contraindications prior to the injection. The actual treatment time is anywhere from 15-30 minutes depending on the desired areas to be treated. The appointment will end with after care education and ‘after’ photos for your profile. Follow up phone calls will be made roughly 3-5 days after your appointment to ensure you are satisfied with your results. The full result may take up to 3 weeks to show. Before you come...

3 DAYS PRIOR: Avoid all blood thinners including alcohol, Advil, Aspirin, Aleve, Omega 3, Fish Oil, Vitamin E, Ginkgo, St. John’s Wort or garlic to avoid bruising

1 DAY PRIOR: Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages to prevent additional bruising.

Inform your service provider if you have a history of cold sores or if you are receiving antiviral therapy prior to treatment

On the day of injection...

DO

Ice the area for ten minutes on and ten minutes off to decrease swelling and potential bruising if needed

Tylenol can help decrease pain without causing additional bleeding or bruising

DON’T

Avoid laying down or any strenuous activity for 6 hours post treatment

Avoid touching or manipulating or direct pressure to injection site

Avoid makeup, exercise, extreme temperatures

Avoid all blood thinners mentioned above including medication or alcohol for at least 24 hours

Redness and swelling are normal. Some bruising may be visible. You may experience some tenderness or a stinging sensation at the treatment site that can last for a few minutes or up to a few days.
